Therapy

Psychological therapy intervention or "talk therapy" is a structured conversation with a trained professional, the goal of which is to help you understand what causes psychological (emotiona) distress and what maintains your emotional difficulties. Often the goal of therapy is to achieve behavioural change that will positively impact emotional wellbeing and improve daily functioning. Not everyone comes to therapy because of emotional distress or to treat a psychological disorder. Sometimes, individuals present to therapy because they have existential questions they are seeking answers to or looking for ways to optimize (improve) how they function in their lives.

The format and psychological approaches to therapy can varry, depending on the issues that individuals are seeking to address. Experienced psychologists often integrate different pcychological approaches into their work with clients to help them achieve their goals.

At the beginning of therapy, sessions are often weekly and as clients develop better understanding of their challenges and ways to approach them, sessions are spread out to bi-weekly. Towards the end of therapy, sessions become "check-ins" in which clients meet with the psychologist once every 3 or 4 weeks to ensure that the behavioural changes they have achieved in therapy are maintained.

Thet termination of therapy is a collaborative process in which the therapist and the client together discuss the gains achieved in therapy and ways to ensure that these changes are maintained over time (outside of therapy) and agree on when termination of services seems appropriate.
